Before lifting, check three points:
- Ribs: The lower ribs should not pop upward as you prepare to raise the weights. You do not need to flatten your back aggressively; simply keep the rib cage broadly stacked over the pelvis.

How to Do the Front Dumbbell Raise
From the standing start, raise both dumbbells forward in a smooth arc. Let the upper arms lead without throwing the hands upward. Keep the elbows softly bent and imagine the hands travelling with the elbows rather than the elbows folding to shorten the lever. Pause when the dumbbells reach roughly shoulder height or when your position begins to change.
Lower slowly until the weights return beside the thighs. Avoid relaxing completely at the bottom if that makes the next rep begin with a bounce. A controlled two-second lowering phase is a practical starting point, but consistency matters more than a fixed tempo. Breathe naturally and reset the rib position before the next repetition.
Film a side view if you cannot tell whether the range is still yours. A clean rep shows the arms moving while the torso stays broadly still. In a compensating rep, the ribs lift, the hips push forward, the back arches, or the dumbbells accelerate past the point where the shoulders can control them. Reduce the load or stop the set at the last clean repetition.
Bilateral Versus Unilateral Front Raises
Raising both dumbbells together is time-efficient and easy to programme. It also creates a symmetrical task: both arms have to complete the same range while the trunk resists the combined load. This is a good default when the weights are light enough that the ribs remain stacked and neither shoulder shrugs.
Unilateral work means raising one dumbbell at a time, either by alternating arms or completing a set on one side before switching. The tradeoff is not that one style is inherently superior. One-arm work gives you more attention per side and can expose a weaker arm, a different stopping point, or a tendency to rotate the torso. In exchange, it takes longer and can invite the free hand or trunk to help if you treat the set like a heavier lift.
Choose the bilateral version for efficiency when both arms move evenly. Keep the load modest enough that the working arm, rather than a torso twist, determines the path.

The lateral deltoid, upper chest, serratus, and trunk muscles may assist or stabilise depending on the grip, range, and whether you are standing strictly. “Primary” does not mean the movement removes every other muscle from the task, and it does not guarantee a particular long-term result.
