How to use weekly training volume

For planning hypertrophy work, training volume is most practical as hard sets per muscle per week. Add direct working sets first, then account for meaningful indirect work from compounds without double-counting every set. The starter ranges above are deliberately editable: the amount you can progress from and recover from matters more than a universal number.

If performance is rising, soreness resolves, and you are recovering between sessions, hold your volume steady. Add only a small amount when progress stalls and recovery is good. If performance falls or fatigue lingers, reduce volume before adding more.

Sets per muscle group per week

Many lifters do well around 10–20 weekly hard sets per muscle, with newer lifters generally needing less. Spread higher totals across two or more sessions when practical so the later sets stay productive. RIR vs RPE: what makes a set count?

A set does not need to reach failure to be productive. Reps in reserve (RIR) estimates how many more clean reps you could have completed; RPE expresses the same effort on a 1–10 scale. Most hypertrophy work is usefully challenging around 1–3 RIR (roughly RPE 7–9). Keep your effort consistent before changing your set target.

Volume load is context, not a score

Volume load is sets × reps × load. It helps you spot trends for the same exercise, but it is not interchangeable across movements: 3 sets of squats and 3 sets of leg extensions can produce very different fatigue and stimulus. Use hard sets for muscle-level planning and volume load as a secondary record.
