The biceps brachii is a strong forearm supinator as well as an elbow flexor, so grip orientation changes how much of the load it takes on versus the brachialis and brachioradialis. A controlled EMG study comparing supinated, neutral, and pronated handgrip curls at matched loads found greater biceps brachii excitation with the supinated grip than with the pronated or neutral grip, while the brachioradialis also showed its greatest excitation in the supinated position.1 This is muscle-activation evidence, not a direct hypertrophy outcome, but it supports the practical rule that a routine trained on one grip exclusively is not distributing load the way a mixed-grip routine does.

Shoulder Position: Long Head vs Short Head
Grip is not the only variable. Shoulder position changes how much stretch the biceps’ two heads are under at the start of the curl. A dumbbell-curl EMG study found that shoulder position changed biceps brachii activation patterns across an incline curl (shoulder extended, arm behind the torso), a standard standing curl, and a preacher curl (shoulder flexed, arm in front of the torso), with the incline and standing positions producing a broader activation pattern through the range and the preacher position concentrating high activation into a shorter part of the movement.2 The long head crosses the shoulder joint, so an arm-behind-the-torso position, as in an incline curl, stretches it more than an arm-in-front position does; the short head does not cross the shoulder, so it is comparatively unaffected by this angle and is instead emphasized more directly in front-of-body positions like a preacher or spider curl.
It’s worth being precise about what this evidence does and does not show. The EMG differences above describe acute muscle activation, not measured long-term size differences between heads. A more recent controlled training study comparing a shoulder-flexed (preacher) curl against a shoulder-extended (Bayesian) cable curl over ten weeks found no significant difference in regional hypertrophy or maximum strength gains between the two shoulder positions when the exercises were matched for resistance profile.3 In practice, this means shoulder-position variation is a reasonable way to vary stimulus and stretch feel across a session, but it is not a guarantee of head-specific size gains, and grip and overall training volume matter at least as much as shoulder angle for total arm growth.

Peak Contraction vs Stretch Position
A free-weight curl and a cable curl do not load the biceps the same way through the range. A dumbbell or barbell curl gets easier as the arm approaches full flexion, since gravity’s leverage on the weight decreases near the top, so these movements load hardest near the bottom, stretched position.
